Employees Missing from the Edit W2 window? Maybe it’s the HIRE Act!

Yes, the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act did expire on December 31, 2010. But some clients have experienced some repercussions when closing 2011. In the interest of keeping things up-to-date, you may have gone in to the Employee Tax Maintenance window and unmarked the Qualified Employee (HIRE) checkbox.

Employee Tax Maintenance Window

Cards | Payroll | Tax

This makes sense—after all, the HIRE Act is expired. However, this presents an issue if the employee previously had wages subject to the HIRE Act. When you go to print your Year-End Wage Report, or pull the employee up in the Edit W-2 window (Cards | Payroll | Edit W2s), you will find the employee is not available.

Fortunately, there’s an easy fix. All you need to do is return to the Employee Tax Maintenance Window and mark the checkbox. This will not impact your taxes or payroll, since the December 31, 2010, stop is programmed into Dynamics GP. Also, you don’t have to rebuild your Year-End Wage file; once the box is marked, the employee will be available in the Edit W2s window.
